Bluesky, the social network, announced on Monday that it now boasts over 10 million users. This surge in growth is primarily due to the rapid expansion of the network in recent weeks, following the shutdown of Elon Musk's X in Brazil.

“If you’re reading this, you’re one of the first 10 million users on Bluesky!” the company celebrated in a post. As a fun feature, Bluesky has an easter egg on its homepage: clicking on the celebration emoji reveals your user number, which you can share with friends.

In the previous month, Brazil’s top court imposed a ban on X and penalized users attempting to access the service via VPN. Following this, social networks like Meta’s Threads and Bluesky experienced a spike in popularity, quickly climbing to the top 10 rankings in the App Store and Play Store under the social media category in Brazil.

Bluesky gained 3 million users within days of the X ban, pushing its total user base beyond 9 million earlier this month. The company reported that more than 85% of new users came from Brazil. Last week, Bluesky saw record activity, leading to a few server glitches due to the high volume of new sign-ups.

Bluesky, which had been operating on an invite-only basis for nearly a year, opened its platform to the public in February. Meanwhile, its competitor, Meta-owned Threads, has grown to over 200 million users. Recently, Bluesky introduced new features, including the ability to post videos and self-moderation tools, such as controlling who can quote a post, hiding replies, and muting specific words for a set period.

It's a milestone for Bluesky. Ten million users is no joke and it reflected hardwork and perseverance despite the stiff competition in the landscape. I think the achievement is largely due to the network's rapid expansion following the shutdown of Elon Musk's X in Brazil
